Richard Hudnut was a colorful character. Originally he owned a drugstore but then turned it into a cosmetics showroom. His cosmetics were usually sold in department stores which were a new phenomenon at the time. After a number of run-ins with authorities over purported smuggling, tax avoidance, and anti-trust, he sold out in 1916 and retired to France. The business was sold to William R. Warner & Company which became Warner-Lambert and that company was eventually acquired by Pfizer Corporation
