Limoges porcelain tastevin by Theodore Haviland with backmark for 1925. Made for Carlton Hotel, Cannes (HQ for film festival).
Measures 4 inches by 4 3/4 inches.
A tastevin is a small, shallow saucer traditionally used by winemakers and sommeliers when judging the maturity and taste of a wine. The saucer-like cups were originally created by Burgundian winemakers to enable them to judge the clarity and color of wine that was stored in dim, candle-lit wine cellars.
The InterContinental hotel Carlton (Cannes) is a 338-room luxury hotel built in 1909, located at 58 La Croisette in Cannes on the French Riviera and listed by the Government of France as a National Historic Building. During the Cannes Film Festival it is the most prestigious place to stay and the undisputed headquarters of motion picture industry deal-making.
