Large Inuit stone carving of an owl. The owl is signed, although we can't read the signature ("Zaul" or "Zaui"? see picture).
This beautiful piece carries the "Canada Eskimo Art" authenticity sticker ("igloo tag"). The striped grain and color of the stone leads us to believe it's argillite, which could indicate an origin in the Belcher Islands. This is consistent with the carving style and subject matter which also appear in many Belcher Islands pieces, especially around Sanikiluaq.
It's about 3 3/4 inches high by 7 1/2 inches long by 3 1/2 inches wide.
Excellent condition.
